Project Overview & Significance
The National Agricultural Genotyping Center (NAGC) leads a volunteer-based sampling program to track ongoing and intensifying herbicide resistance (HR) issues in Minnesota, Montana, and North Dakota weed populations. The survey provides genotyping services to farmers, consultants, agronomists, and researchers for rapid HR evaluation.
Greenhouse herbicide trials remain essential but face logistical challenges, including limited space and long turnaround times. Testing multiple herbicides requires growing many seedlings, delaying results by 1-2 months. Additionally, trials assess HR potential for the next season but cannot test actively growing weeds, creating a diagnostic gap. Faster, year-round HR tests could reduce greenhouse trial demands and improve weed control strategies.
Genetic screening can supplement greenhouse trails by detecting HR markers in seeds, seedlings, or mature plants, providing results within days. This enables in-season testing, aiding herbicide decisions. The NAGC sampling program continues to expand, emphasizing early- and late-season genetic testing when herbicides are applied. Samples can be submitted by mail, helping troubleshoot herbicide failures and guide future weed management.
Confidential reports assist growers in selecting herbicide mixes for maximum returns, while county-level maps highlight HR hotspots. These insights support targeted outreach and extension efforts to combat HR weeds across Minnesota, Montana, and North Dakota.

Prices: Thanks to ND Soybean Council, ND Corn Utilization Council, Northern Canola Growers Association, Northern Pulse Growers Association, North Dakota Wheat Commission, Minnesota Soybean and Minnesota Wheat testing fees are covered for hundreds of samples and will remain open until funding cap has been reached. Funding for test validation at NAGC was also provided through a North Dakota Department of Agriculture, Specialty Crop Block Grant.
Test Result Information: Results will be sent to only the email addresses listed on the submission form by an automated system (noreply@nagc.limsplus.com). No personal information or exact locations will be released to the public. Standard turnaround for results is 5-10 business days upon sample receipt at NAGC.
