Description
Kochia (Bassia scoparia) is a highly destructive weed across the U.S. There is growing concern that herbicide resistance (HR) is spreading and understanding the distribution of resistant weeds is necessary to develop effective weed management strategies.
Protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO-) inhibitors are classified as Group 14 herbicides that are effective herbicides used for kochia control. Beginning in 2022, NDSU greenhouse trials found that kochia populations within North Dakota were highly resistant to foliar and soil-applied Group 14 herbicides. A new mutation providing target-stie resistance has been identified through a collaboration between NDSU and BASF. NAGC quickly validated a genotyping assay, which detects the multiple mutations that are associated with Group 14 resistance in kochia.
This project was funded by the North Dakota Corn Utilization Council, North Dakota Soybean Council, and North Dakota Department of Agriculture.
